Sango United Methodist marks 20 Year Partnership with Habitat for Humanity

The annual Sango Scamper 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Fun Run has been a Clarksville tradition for more than 20 years with proceeds benefiting affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County.

In that time, the run, sponsored by Sango United Methodist Church has raised $40,464, which equals the cost of roofing materials for one Habitat house every year since 2003. Pastor Dane van Eys credits the members of the Sango UMC congregation for the longstanding commitment to the housing ministry. “In a world where there’s a lot of division, Habitat for Humanity unifies us because everyone agrees we want safe and good housing for people who need it. It’s a project that brings us together and that’s a really beautiful thing.” Van Eys said.

Habitat Executive Director Rob Selkow said the church provided more than just a check. “Through the years members of Sango United Methodist have worked on various projects, and regularly shop and donate at our Clarksville ReStore,” said Selkow. “To have that kind of involvement over 20 years is a great encouragement and blessing.”

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County builds new construction, single-family homes in partnership with qualified low-income applicants. Families go through financial and homeownership education, and volunteer hundreds of hours to Habitat, and in turn are provided a 20-year, 0% interest loan. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving fund for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County that supports the construction of new homes.
